Effect of epidural analgesia on cancer prognosis after colon cancer resection: A single-centre cohort study in Taiwan
BMJ Open Oct 27, 2020
Wu HL, Tai YH, Mandell MS, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort analysis to examine the link between epidural analgesia and cancer recurrence or death post-resections for colon cancer. This inquiry included patients with stage I through III colon cancer receiving bowel resection and being treated with either epidural analgesia or intravenous opioid analgesia from 2005 to 2014. Experts examined 2,748 and 1,218 patients prior to and following propensity score matching. Higher level of preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen, perioperative blood transfusion, advanced cancer stage and pathological lymphovascular invasion were identified as independent prognostic factors for cancer recurrence and death. Findings revealed no definite link between epidural analgesia and risk of recurrence or death among patients receiving colon cancer resection.
