Effect of diabetes mellitus on risk of latent TB infection in a high TB incidence area: A community-based study in Taiwan
BMJ Open Nov 06, 2019
Lin CH, Kuo SC, Hsieh MC, et al. - Researchers conducted this community-based comparison study to explore the connection between diabetes and latent tuberculosis infections (LTBI) in high TB incidence areas. To recruit non-diabetic candidates, a community-based screening programme was used. In total, 2,948 patients with diabetes aged older than 40 years were selected, and 453 non-diabetic candidates from the community were enlisted. In patients with diabetes from this high incidence area of TB, there was a moderately increased risk of LTBI. Many patients with diabetes also had additional risk factors, comorbid chronic kidney disease and TB history. This finding suggests combining LTBI screening for diabetics with other risk factors and TB co-morbidities to better identify high-risk groups and enhance the effectiveness of targeted LTBI screening. Diabetes duration and poor glycaemic control were not associated with LTBI risk.
