Effect of dexmedetomidine on intracranial pressures during laparoscopic surgery: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Oct 15, 2018

Sahay N, et al. - In this prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, researchers sought to determine the impact of dexmedetomidine infusion on alterations in intracranial pressures (ICPs) during laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 60 patients, given that laparoscopic surgeries cause an increase in ICP after creation of pneumoperitoneum. Findings demonstrated the efficacy of dexmedetomidine in reducing the increase in ICP linked with laparoscopic surgeries. Placement of patient in the reverse Trendelenburg position during laparoscopic cholecystectomy led to an evident benefit seen 10 minutes after placement.
