Effect of dementia on the incidence, short-term outcomes, and resource utilization of invasive mechanical ventilation in the elderly: A nationwide population-based study
Critical Care Sep 09, 2019
Bouza C, et al. - Using the Spanish national hospital discharge database (2000–2013), researchers focused on the impact of dementia on the incidence, outcomes, and hospital resource utilization in elderly patients (aged ≥ 65 years) undergoing mechanical ventilation. They divided the participants into 2 cohorts (patients with or without dementia) and compared the main outcome measures in those cohorts. In this nationwide population-based study, they found that in-hospital mortality in elderly patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation was not influenced by dementia. However, a significant link of dementia with shorter stay and hospital costs was observed. In elderly patients with dementia, the use of this life-support measure was found to be increased markedly recently and in comparison with elderly individuals without dementia, this increase was much greater.
