Effect of community-based lifestyle interventions on weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors in obese elderly in China: A randomized controlled trial
Experimental Gerontology Oct 23, 2019
Chao J, et al. - Researchers undertook a two-arm, parallel, randomized, controlled trial to evaluate how weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors among obese older adults are influenced by community-based lifestyle interventions. They also assessed potential factors that hinder weight loss during lifestyle interventions. The investigation was conducted from 2013 through 2016 in community health service centers in Nanjing, China, and included 480 obese older adults. Participants were randomized to partake in a 24-month lifestyle intervention (n = 242) or receive usual care (n = 238). At the end of the intervention, a statistically significant weight loss was achieved; the control group and the intervention group exhibited a mean reduction of 0.03 ± 2.51 kg and 3.22 ± 3.43 kg, respectively. Being female, living alone, and having more comorbidities were identified as factors that hindered weight loss during the intervention upon multivariable logistic regression. Overall, findings revealed the efficacy of community-based lifestyle interventions in managing weight as well as in improving cardiometabolic risk factors in obese older adults.
