Effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on sleep disturbances and quality of life among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A randomized controlled trial
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jul 04, 2020
Zuo X, Dong Z, Zhang P, et al. - Researchers examined if and how cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) affects sleep disturbances and quality of life in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM). Among 187 participants with T2DM and comorbid poor sleep quality, the control group was comprised of 93 participants receiving usual care (UC) only and the intervention group was comprised of 94 participants receiving CBT with aerobic exercise plus UC. After 6-month follow-up, the CBT group had 3.03 points lower Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores and 7.92 points lower total Diabetes Specific Quality of Life Scale scores compared with the control group. Findings here support the effectiveness of CBT for sleep disturbances and suggest it as potentially valuable for improving sleep quality, increasing quality of life, and decreasing glycemic levels in participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
