Effect of clinically significant thresholds of eosinophil elevation on health care resource use in asthma
Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology May 31, 2020
Dotiwala Z, Casciano J, Davis JR, et al. - Utilizing data from EMRClaims + database, researchers assessed health care resource use in asthma patients with high blood eosinophil counts defined at 150 cells/μL or greater and 300 cells/μL or greater. If any test result during 3 months prior to follow-up revealed blood eosinophil count of 150 cells/μL or more or 300 cells/μL or more, then the patients were defined as having high eosinophil counts. Of 3,687 patients who were eligible, a test within 3 months prior to the follow-up period was received by 1,152, of whom 644 (56%) were found to have high eosinophil counts of 150 cells/μL or greater and 322 (29%) exhibited eosinophil counts of 300 cells/μL or greater. Findings revealed a greater health care resource use (number of hospitalizations and expenses) among patients with asthma in relation to their blood eosinophil counts elevated at 150 cells/μL or greater and 300 cells/μL or greater as measured within 3 months of follow-up.
