Effect of caffeine intake on postoperative ileus: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Digestive Surgery Jan 16, 2019
Gkegkes ID, et al. - Researchers investigated the effect of coffee on the incidence of postoperative ileus, a complication that prolongs both hospital stay and patients’ morbidity while having a simultaneous impact on health care costs. This meta-analysis of four studies with 341 patients suggests that postoperative administration of coffee leads to significant reduction in the time to first bowel movement, the time to first flatus, and the time to tolerance of solid diet, without having any impact on postoperative morbidity. This indicates that the use of coffee as a means of postoperative ileus prevention can change the way postoperative enhanced recovery is applied.
