Effect of bisphosphonates on local recurrence of giant cell tumor of bone: A meta-analysis
Cancer Management and Research Jan 19, 2019
Shi M, et al. - Researchers analyzed 7 case–control studies reporting the impact of bisphosphonates (BPs) on local recurrence of giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB). These studies were identified from PubMed, AMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane library, ISI Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the pooled adjusted ORs were calculated. Findings corroborated the impact of BPs on attenuating the local recurrence of GCTB, and tumor grades had no influence on the impact. A significantly lower total local recurrence rate was observed in the BP group vs the control group in GCTB (P<0.01). The BP group vs the control group, among patients who underwent intralesional curettage, had a significantly lower local recurrence rate, but no significance was found for patients who underwent wide resection (P=0.16). No severe adverse effects were reported in association with the use of BPs.
