Effect of background parenchymal enhancement on cancer risk across different high-risk patient populations undergoing screening breast MRI
American Journal of Roentgenology Mar 26, 2019
Sippo DA, et al. - Across various high-risk patient populations undergoing breast MRI screening, researchers assessed the impact of background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) on breast cancer risk. They reviewed consecutive screening breast MRI examinations performed between 2011 and 2014. After adjusting for age, breast density, and screening indication, the odds ratio for developing cancer in the moderate or marked BPE group vs the minimal or mild group was 2.1. In women undergoing screening MRI for different high-risk indications, increased BPE level independently predicted breast cancer.
