Effect of antihypertensive medication on cerebral small vessel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Stroke Jun 05, 2018
van Middelaar T, et al. - Researchers examined the impact of antihypertensive medication (AHM) on the advance of cerebral small vessel disease through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A literature search for randomized controlled trials studying the impact of AHM on ≥1 cerebral small vessel disease magnetic resonance imaging markers (ie, white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, microbleeds, enlarged perivascular spaces, acute small subcortical infarcts, and brain atrophy) after ≥1 year was performed. It was observed that there was a protective effect on the progression of white matter hyperintensities with AHM, however no effect on brain atrophy was found. There were no trials on the impact of AHM on lacunes, microbleeds, enlarged perivascular spaces, or acute small subcortical infarcts.
