Effect of anti-epileptic drugs on the survival of patients with glioblastoma multiforme: A retrospective, single-center study

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Dec 11, 2019

Ryu JY, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers sought the most appropriate therapeutic measures for patients with Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) by performing survival analysis elucidating the impacts of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in patients with GBM in Korea. Four hundred eighteen patients managed with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ) were examined at Severance Hospital in South Korea. Using the Cox proportional model, the effects of AEDs when administered to > 10 patients were analyzed. Of the nine AED groups, only LEV treatment had significant correlation with the overall survival (OS) in the univariate analysis. Patients treated with levetiracetam (LEV) had a median OS of 21 months, whereas it was 16 months in among patients treated without LEV, exhibiting a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Findings suggest that relative to other AEDs, LEV administration may increase the survival period in GBM patients with methylated methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase promoters, who are undergoing chemotherapy with TMZ.
