Effect of alcohol use disorders and alcohol intake on the risk of subsequent depressive symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies
Addiction Jan 23, 2020
Li J, Wang H, Li M, et al. - Researchers examined the correlation between alcohol use disorders, alcohol intake, and subsequent depressive symptoms via conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies identified through a search of PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO databases. In all, 338,426 participants from 42 studies were assessed. The researchers observed an increase in the risk of subsequent depressive symptoms in correlation with alcohol use disorders. After adjusting for potential confounders, no significant predictive value of heavy drinking (> 168 g/week or > 48 g/day at least weekly) for the occurrence of depressive symptoms was identified.
