Effect of alcohol consumption on survival in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: A national prospective cohort study
Hepatology Oct 24, 2018
Hajifathalian K, et al. - This study determined the impact of alcohol consumption on survival in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) via collecting information on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey participants from 1988 to 2010, and linked them to the National Death Index for follow-up of their survival. Findings suggested an association of modest alcohol consumption with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality among patients with NAFLD. On the other hand, drinking ≥1.5 drinks per day was related to an increase in mortality. In patients with NAFLD, these outcomes help to inform the discussion of potential risks and benefits of alcohol use.
