Effect of alcohol consumption on survival in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A national prospective cohort study
Hepatology Aug 23, 2018
Hajifathalian K, et al. - Researchers collected data on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) participants from 1988 to 2010, and linked them to National Death Index (NDI) for follow up of their survival to determine the impact of alcohol consumption on survival in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). They found that among patients with NAFLD modest alcohol consumption was related to a significant reduction in all-cause mortality. On the other hand, drinking >1.5 drinks per day was correlated with an increase in mortality. The results obtained from the study help to inform the discussion of the potential risks and benefits of alcohol use in patients with NAFLD.
