Effect of age at menarche on microvascular complications among women with type 1 diabetes

Diabetic Medicine Mar 21, 2019

Yi Y, et al. - Using cross-sectional and prospective analyses over a 2.5-decade follow-up period, researchers investigated whether delayed menarche is correlated with an increased risk of microvascular complication (overt nephropathy, proliferative retinopathy, and confirmed distal symmetric polyneuropathy) in women with type 1 diabetes. They included data from 315 of 325 women who had reached menarche by study baseline (1986–1988) and who self-reported menarche age. Menarche age was significantly related to the prevalence and cumulative incidence of overt nephropathy, but not with proliferative retinopathy or type 1 diabetes-confirmed distal symmetric polyneuropathy. Therefore, women with delayed menarche may be targeted for early screening and timely interventions to avoid nephropathy development.
