Effect of adrenomedullin on migraine-like attacks in patients with migraine: A randomized crossover study
Neurology® May 28, 2021
Ghanizada H, Al-Karagholi MAL, Arngrim N, et al. - The present study was performed to ascertain if the IV infusion of adrenomedullin, a potent vasodilator belonging to the calcitonin family of peptides, provokes attacks of migraine in patients. Researchers designed a placebo-controlled and double-blind clinical study including a total of 20 patients with migraines without aura. Via an automated IV pump, the patients received an IV infusion of human adrenomedullin (19.9 pmol/kg/min) or placebo (saline). The findings implicate adrenomedullin in migraine pathogenesis. This implies that adrenomedullin or its receptors are novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of migraines. Nevertheless, they cannot discount the possibility that adrenomedullin may be acting through the canonical calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor.
