Effect of acupuncture on post-hemorrhoidectomy pain: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Pain Research Aug 20, 2018
Wu J, et al. - In this single-center, single-blind, and randomized controlled clinical trial, electroacupuncture (EA) was assessed in terms of clinical efficacy and safety in relieving pain after hemorrhoidectomy treatment for mixed hemorrhoids. A total of 72 patients with mixed hemorrhoids who had undergone hemorrhoidectomy were included in this study. These subjects were randomized to receive surround needling with EA (n=36, the EA treatment group) or sham acupuncture (SA) treatment (n=36, the control group). A significantly lower visual analog scale scores at the 3 time points of 6, 24 h, and during the defecation was observed in the EA group. Also, compared with the SA group, the EA group had significantly lower Wong–Baker Faces Pain Rating scores at 5, 7, and 8 h after treatment and during defecation. Based on these findings, they concluded that, acupuncture has efficacy in relieving postoperative pain in patients who had undergone hemorrhoidectomy.
