Effect of a workplace wellness program on employee health and economic outcomes: A randomized clinical trial

JAMA Apr 21, 2019

Song Z, et al. - In this trial, researchers assessed a multicomponent workplace wellness program resembling programs offered by US employers. The study sample consisted of 32,974 employees at a large US warehouse retail company. According to findings, a workplace wellness intervention resulted in significantly higher rates of some positive self-reported health behaviors among exposed vs non-exposed employees, but after 18 months there were no significant differences in clinical health measures, spending, utilization of health care, and employment outcomes. While limited by incomplete data on certain outcomes, these findings may temper expectations about the investment financial return that wellness programs can deliver in the short term.
