Effect of a data-driven intervention on opioid prescribing intensity among Emergency Department providers: A randomized controlled trial

Academic Emergency Medicine Jun 11, 2018

Michael SS, et al. - Researchers investigated if future opioid prescribing would be altered by implementing an intervention asking Emergency Department (ED) providers to self-identify their opioid prescribing practices compared to group norms—and subsequently providing them with their actual prescribing data, compared to controls. They noted frequent inaccuracy of self-perception of prescribing. Among providers who underestimated their baseline prescribing, future prescribing was reduced by providing clinicians with their actual opioid prescribing data after querying their self-perception. The potential barrier of inaccurate provider self-awareness was recommended to be directly addressed in guideline and policy interventions.
