Economic evaluation of elective cesarean vs vaginal delivery on cost of future pelvic floor disorders in the United States
Neurourology and Urodynamics Nov 27, 2020
Kuhlmann PK, Patel DN, Chen A, et al. - Researchers here compared the cost impact of cesarean vs vaginal delivery in the United States on the development of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women < 65 years. For vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery, the average estimated cost was $7,089 vs $9905, respectively. For SUI and POP, the estimated absolute risks were 7% and 5%, respectively, following cesarean delivery, and 13% and 14%, respectively, following vaginal delivery. Overall findings suggest that despite reduced prevalence of PFDs following elective cesarean, the increased initial cost of cesarean delivery does not offset future cost savings.
