ECMO (extra corporeal membrane oxygenation) in major trauma: A 10 year single center experience
Injury Apr 08, 2021
Amos T, Bannon-Murphy H, Yeung M, et al. - Researchers conducted a single center, retrospective, cohort study with the aim to determine the indications, complications and outcomes of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in major trauma patients. They identified a total of 13,420 major trauma patients over a 10 year period from their institutional trauma registry, 11 of whom were identified as having received ECMO. Severe hypoxaemic respiratory failure was the primary indication for ECMO use in major trauma patients. Overall survival was poor in this severely injured cohort, however, it was better in veno-venous (VV) ECMO compared with veno-arterial (VA). Early initiation of ECMO (< 72 hours) was linked with better survival compared with late initiation.
