Eating disorder risk in adolescents with obesity
Obesity Reviews Jan 28, 2021
Jebeile H, Lister NB, Baur LA, et al. - In adolescents with obesity, researchers sought to summarize the literature on the risk of clinical eating disorders, as well as discuss the challenges with assessing risk and the implications of these for clinical practice and future research. Adolescents with obesity often display recognized eating disorder risk factors (ie, body dissatisfaction, poor self‐esteem, depression, engaging in dieting behaviors) indicating their vulnerability to developing eating disorders. Eating disorder risk may be worse in cases with unsupervised dieting to manage weight, while a reduction in eating disorder risk is likely when weight management is structured and supervised. Based on these findings, they emphasize utilizing a risk management approach, with screening or monitoring for eating disorder‐related risk factors and behaviors, to recognize those at risk. They suggest the necessity for future research to determine eating disorder risk factors specific to adolescents with obesity to better address screening and monitoring protocols, patient care, and address current knowledge gaps.
