Eating disorder behaviors and treatment seeking in self-identified military personnel and veterans: Results of the national eating disorders association online screening
Eating Behaviours Sep 10, 2021
Flatt RE, Norman E, Thornton LM, et al. - Military personnel/veterans may differ from civilians in disordered eating and eating disorder (ED) profiles, but not in treatment seeking.
The National Eating Disorders Association's online screen was completed by 113,388 self-selecting participants (of these, 1,744 were military personnel/veterans).
An eating disorder was detected, via screening, in over 85% of the self-selecting sample.
Receipt of treatment was reported in < 3% of those who screened positive for an eating disorder.
Relative to civilians, the military/veteran group more frequently engaged in disordered eating behaviors.
More disordered eating was reported in female military/veteran group vs female civilians.
Across treatment status, military/veteran and civilians did not differ.
