Early weaning vs prolonged administration of aqueous suppressants for prevention of hyperencapsulation in paediatric Ahmed glaucoma valve

Acta Ophthalmologica Jan 31, 2020

Rateb MF, et al. - The role of early and prolonged administration of aqueous suppressants in the reduction of hyperencapsulation and intraocular pressure (IOP) control following implantation of pediatric Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) was determined via performing a prospective randomized interventional study recruiting children who had AGV implantation for pediatric glaucoma. Timolol 0.5% was provided to all patients postoperatively for either 12 months (Group A) or 3 months (Group B). In cases where IOP exceeded 21 mmHg or hyperencapsulation developed, additional IOP-reducing medications were added. They assessed 86 children who finished the 12-month follow-up visits. Outcomes revealed a significantly reduced rate of hyperencapsulation and achievement of better IOP control after pediatric AGV implantation in correlation to early and prolonged use of aqueous suppressants.
