Early vs standard colonoscopy: A randomized controlled trial in patients with acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding: Results of the BLEED Study
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 10, 2019
van Rongen I, et al. - In this single center, nonblinded, randomized controlled trial, researchers investigated differences in length of hospital stay (LOHS) between subjects with lower gastrointestinal bleeding who received either an early colonoscopy (within 24 h of presentation) or a standard colonoscopy (within 1 to 3 d). There were a total of 132 patients included. A total of 63 subjects were randomized for <24 hours colonoscopy and 69 for standard colonoscopy. Findings revealed that early colonoscopy reduces LOHS, but also leads to lower clinical effectiveness compared to standard colonoscopy.
