Early stage lung cancer survival after wedge resection and stereotactic body radiation
Journal of Thoracic Disease Oct 31, 2018
Taioli E, et al. - In patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the efficacy of wedge resection vs stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) was compared in terms of 5-year overall survival (OS), via a meta-analysis. Researchers used the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health PubMed database and the reference lists of reviewed articles to identify original research articles published between 1995 and 2017. Data were processed and analyzed in R (version 3.4.2). They calculated a summary estimate that accounted for the sample size of each study. According to findings, SBRT was earmarked for treating patients considered medically inoperable. However, in medically operable patients who preferred a less invasive treatment, SBRT could be an alternative to surgery. A higher 5-year OS was seen following wedge resection in two articles directly comparing stage I NSCLC patients treated with wedge resection to patients treated with SBRT.
