Early self‐proning in awake, non‐intubated patients in the emergency department: A single ED’s experience during the COVID‐19 pandemic

Academic Emergency Medicine May 16, 2020

Caputo ND, et al. - This study was sought to present the usage of early proning of awake, non‐intubated patients in the emergency department (ED) during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Researchers conducted a pilot study in a single urban ED in New York City to include patients suspected of having COVID‐19 with hypoxia on arrival. Low oxygen saturations (SpO2) was measured using a standard pulse oximeter. They recorded SpO2 measurements at triage and after 5 minutes of proning. They also defined post‐proning failure rates of intubation within the first 24 hours of arrival to the ED. This study enrolled a total of 50 patients. The data exhibited that in the emergency department, awake early self‐proning demonstrated improved oxygen saturation in the COVID‐19 positive patients. Further research is required to support causality and ascertain the impact of proning on disease severity and mortality.
