Early response to psychological therapy as a predictor of depression and anxiety treatment outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Depression and Anxiety Jul 02, 2019

Beard JIL, et al. - In view of previous studies indicating a relationship between early symptomatic improvement (usually seen in the first 4 weeks of psychological therapy) with positive treatment outcomes for many mental health problems, researchers studied the literature on early response to psychological interventions for adults with depression and anxiety symptoms to assess the replicability, statistical significance, and magnitude of this association. They identified 25 eligible studies with 11,091 patients that measured early response and studied links with posttreatment outcomes. This study yielded strong and replicated evidence indicating the reliable prognostic value of early response to therapy for depression and anxiety treatment outcomes. Early responders had significantly better posttreatment outcomes vs cases without early response; this effect was greater in anxiety vs depression measures.
