Early recurrent arrhythmias after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest associated with obstructive coronary artery disease: Analysis of the PROCAT registry
Resuscitation Jun 14, 2019
Bellut H, et al. - Researchers examined the incidence and predisposing factors for severe cardiac arrhythmias among out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients resuscitated from ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia as initial rhythm associated with obstructive coronary artery disease, and had a successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention. They conducted a retrospective study in a cardiac arrest center among 256 patients. Of these, 29 (11.3%) experienced a major arrhythmia [mostly ventricular fibrillation (VF) (44.8%)]; 79.3% of cases experienced it within the first 24 h. Patients with major arrhythmia recurrence had significantly increased mortality rate (69% vs 41%). They noted a significant association of male gender with recurrence of severe arrhythmia. No change in the risk of recurrence was noted in correlation to treatment with prophylactic anti-arrhythmic in the intensive care unit.
