Early recovery patterns of olfactory disorders in COVID-19 patients; A clinical cohort study
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Sep 18, 2020
Amer MA, El-Sherif HS, Abdel-Hamid AS, et al. - The present study was conducted to evaluate the different patterns of olfactory disorders recovery in patients with COVID-19. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional cohort study including a total of 96 patients with olfactory complaints confirmed to be COVID-19 positive with the recent onset of anosmia. Self-assessment questionnaires were applied to inquire about all patients for smell recovery patterns. This analysis included a total of 96 patients with a mean age of 34.26 ± 11.91 years. In patients with COVID-19, sudden olfactory dysfunction is a common symptom. While the middle age group carried the best prognosis in olfactory recovery, hyposmia patients recover more rapidly than anosmic ones. It was shown that in patients with COVID19, females possess better potentiality in regaining smell after recovery and the association of comorbidities worsens the recovery rate of olfactory dysfunction.
