Early readmission to hospital in patients with cancer with malignant pleural effusions
Chest Oct 25, 2019
Mitchell MA, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers used the Nationwide Readmissions Database (2014 sample) to know about the proportion of all-cause, unplanned, 30-day readmissions to hospital among patients with malignant pleural effusions (MPEs), so that a readmission reduction strategy could be developed by acquiring knowledge on the incidence as well as risk factors for readmission in this patient population. They found that readmission to the hospital within 30 days of discharge was sought by one in four patients with cancer and MPEs, and the death of nearly one in five was reported during the readmission. More readmissions were caused by nondefinitive management with thoracentesis. Having Medicaid insurance status, treatment with thoracentesis only, and discharge to a care facility or home healthcare were identified as the factors that predicted early readmission.
