Early readmission predicts increased mortality in cirrhosis patients after Clostridium difficile infection
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 11, 2019
Kruger AJ, et al. - Researchers assessed the Nationwide Readmissions Database (2011 to 2014) to examine the impact of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) in cirrhosis and also the patterns and consequences of early readmission and mortality among cirrhosis cases. They noted higher 30-day readmission rates (33% vs 24%), index admission mortality (5% vs 2.5%), and calendar-year mortality (9% vs 4%) in subjects with cirrhosis vs those without cirrhosis (among patients with CDI). They reported recurrent CDI (rCDI) (46%) and cirrhosis-related complications (34.6%) as the most frequent reasons for readmission. They also noted higher readmissions among decompensated cirrhosis cases within 30-days than those with compensated cirrhosis. They recorded index colectomy and decompensation as the predictors of index admission mortality among patients with cirrhosis.
