Early pregnancy prediction of gestational diabetes mellitus risk using prenatal screening biomarkers in nulliparous women

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Apr 09, 2020

Snyder BM, Baer RJ, Oltman SP, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, researchers assessed the clinical utility of first and second trimester prenatal screening biomarkers for early pregnancy prediction of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk in nulliparous women. The sample consisted of nulliparous women who enrolled in the California Prenatal Screening Program from 2009-2011 (n = 105,379). According to results, reduced levels of first trimester pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) and increased levels of second trimester unconjugated estriol (uE 3) and dimeric inhibin A (INH) were linked to GDM. For prediction of GDM risk in nulliparous women, PAPP-A, uE 3, and INH have limited clinical utility. Further investigation is warranted by the use of other readily available clinical biomarkers to predict GDM risk.
