Early prediction of periventricular leukomalacia using quantitative texture analysis of serial cranial ultrasound scans in very preterm infants
Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Jul 24, 2019
Jung HN, et al. - Researchers contrasted texture parameters of serial cranial ultrasound (cUS) images of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and normal periventricular echogenicity (PVE) in very preterm infants and assessed the early predictive values of texture analysis (TA) for PVL. The study involved 10 subjects with PVL and 10 control subjects with PVE evaluated with an initial cUS within 1 wk of birth and follow-up cUS at 2–3 and 4–6 wk of life. At the parieto-occipital area on serial cUS, TA was conducted on the region of interest of PVE. Between the first two cUS sessions in both groups, opposite alterations in the variance were observed. Among the second and first cUS sessions, the variance-to-mean ratio varied and dependably stratified the groups. Hence, in order to prognosticate PVL within 3 weeks of life, TA of serial cUS assisted.
