Early postoperative opioid consumption: A comparison between medial unicompartmental, patellofemoral, and total knee arthroplasty
The Knee Aug 23, 2019
Melnic CM, et al. - In this retrospective chart review, researchers recognized 37 patients who underwent patellofemoral arthroplasty (PFA) and 71 patients who underwent medial compartmental arthroplasty (UKA) in order to contrast the early postoperative narcotic needs following UKA and PFA with that of TKA. In the PFA group vs the UKA group, there were younger and more females participants. The UKA cohort had more non-smoking patients in comparison with the PFA cohort. Between the three groups of patients, self-reported opioid use at the first postoperative visit varied. When compared with UKA patients, a greater proportion of both PFA and TKA patients reported opioid use. Between TKA and PFA groups, no variations in opioid use endured. Thus, the prevalence of PFA patients who report opioid use at the first postoperative visit is comparable to that for patients subsequent to TKA, implying that pain management protocols for this specific subset of partial knee arthroplasty patients should be structured comparable to TKA patients and separate from UKA patients.
