Early postoperative nausea and vomiting: A retrospective observational study of 2,030 patients
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Jun 09, 2021
Johansson E, Hultin M, Myrberg T, et al. - Researchers undertook this single-centre retrospective observational analysis to determine and define the risk of early postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in a post-anaesthesia care unit. They tested their hypothesis that patients- and perioperative factors were related to early PONV. Participants were adult patients who had surgical procedures under general anaesthesia. Overall 2030 patients were analyzed, of which 9.6 % (n=194) developed early PONV. Suboptimal PONV prophylaxis, requirement for opioids, female gender, body mass index > 35 kg/m 2 , and major surgery and anaesthesia time ≥ 60 minutes were revealed as the factors related to a high risk of early PONV. Findings revealed that early PONV occurred in every tenth patient under general anaesthesia. Suboptimal PONV prophylaxis as well as prior identified risk factors for PONV were shown to be related to early PONV.
