Early postoperative fluid retention is a strong predictor for complications after pancreatoduodenectomy
HPB Jun 05, 2019
Åkerberg D, et al. - Between 2010 and 2016, the Swedish National Pancreatic and Periampullary Cancer Registry collected data from 1174 patients undergoing pancreatic duodenectomy to examine the incidence of fluid retention following pancreatic resection and its connection with postoperative complications. Investigators found that total complications, surgical complications, pancreatic anastomotic leakage and wound infection were significantly higher in patients with fluid retention. Early fluid retention as an independent risk factor for total complications, surgical complications, pancreatic anastomotic leakage and wound infection was confirmed by multivariable logistic regression. After elective pancreatic resection, fluid retention is common and linked to an increased rate of postoperative complications.
