Early otorrhea rates: A randomized trial of ciprofloxacin vs saline drops after tympanostomy tubes
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Apr 25, 2019
Gabarain G, et al. - Two hundred individuals were retrospectively analyzed to assess the incidence, duration, and quality of life (QOL) impact of early tympanostomy tube otorrhea and tube patency while topical ciprofloxacin vs normal saline use in the perioperative period. They completed the survey and in-office follow-ups in 128 cases. For normal saline, the overall otorrhea incidence was 23.9% wh 1ereas it was 6.7% for ciprofloxacin. They did not report any difference in the incidence, duration, and QOL impact of early tympanostomy tube otorrhea or tube patency in ciprofloxacin vs normal saline. They, therefore, supported the choice to replace normal saline for ciprofloxacin in ears without an active ear infection at the time of tube placement, which would decrease the cost and unnecessary antibiotic use, both.
