Early-onset type 2 diabetes < 60 years and risk of vascular complications

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Nov 12, 2021

Yen FS, Lo YR, Hwu CM, et al. - In diabetes, long-term health outcomes may differ based on age of diabetes onset. Seemingly, there remains an excess risk for mortality and vascular complications in individuals with young-onset and early-onset diabetes.

  • Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2000 to 2012), a total of 66,520 paired age-, and gender-matched persons with and without type 2 diabetes were identified.

  • Regardless of onset age, higher associated risks of all-cause mortality and vascular complications were observed in individuals with type 2 diabetes vs their matched counterparts without diabetes.

  • Relative to the odds of complications between those with diabetes and non-diabetes in the late-onset diabetes group, there were generally greater excess odds in young-onset diabetes vs the early-onset diabetes (for stroke: 1.90 vs 1.32; heart failure: 2.03 vs 1.58; myocardial infarction: 3.02 vs 1.56; and microvascular complications: 3.52 vs 3.01).
