Early MRI-based changes in patients with meniscal tear and osteoarthritis
Arthritis Care & Research Apr 04, 2019
Collins JE, et al. - Authors researched 18-month follow up data from the Meniscal Tear in Osteoarthritis Research (MeTeOR) Trial to quantify the changes in knee MRI findings in subjects with osteoarthritic change (OA) and meniscal tear (MT) managed with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) vs non-operatively with physical therapy (PT) over the course of 18 months. They observed that cartilage surface area damage advanced in ≥2 subregions in 60% of the APM group vs 33% of the PT group. Greater advancement in scores for osteophytes and effusion-synovitis were noted in candidates who underwent APM. They did not record significant correlations between treatment type and change in cartilage thickness, bone marrow lesions (BMLs), or Hoffa-synovitis.
