Early glomerular hyperfiltration and long-term kidney outcomes in type 1 diabetes: The DCCT/EDIC experience
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Jun 14, 2019
Molitch ME, et al. - Given that glomerular hyperfiltration has been considered to be a contributing factor to the development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), researchers examined participants from Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT)/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications study with type 1 diabetes and having undergone an 125I-iothalamate clearance at DCCT baseline, to address this issue. They analyzed GFR follow-up data. Findings revealed no link between early hyperfiltration in patients with type 1 diabetes and a higher long-term risk of reduced GFR. In DKD, although glomerular hypertension could be a mechanism of kidney injury, higher total GFR was not recognized as a risk factor for advanced DKD.
