Early differential value of plasma presepsin on infection of trauma patients
Shock Aug 21, 2019
Kang J, et al. - Among trauma patients, the early differential value of plasma presepsin, procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), and white blood cells (WBCs) on infection was assessed in this study including 89 noninfected and 68 infected trauma patients. Controls were 60 healthy adult volunteers and 60 patients having sterile surgery. Researchers measured plasma presepsin, PCT, CRP, and WBC counts and computed the injury severity score. Findings are suggestive of possible superiority of presepsin as a biomarker for early differentiation of infection in trauma patients; however, an increase in PCT, CRP, and WBCs was induced by trauma stress even in the absence of infection. Thus, exercising caution was recommended when using these indicators to diagnose infection.
