Early diagnosed gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes: A prospective cohort study
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Sep 13, 2020
Liu B, Cai J, Xu Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cohort study to examine gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) diagnosed by early and standard oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) and determine adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes correlated with early GDM diagnosis. Each participant carried out two OGTTs, an early OGTT in 18-20 gestational weeks (gws) and a standard OGTT in 24–28 gws. In total, 522 participants completed both the early and standard OGTTs. Data reported that the reproducibility of early and standard OGTT results was 74.9%. Neonates born to mothers in the GDM group were at a higher risk for gestational age and were more prone to neonatal hyperinsulinemia as well. Early-onset GDM diagnosed at 18-20 gws by OGTT is associated with both maternal and neonatal metabolic disorders and adverse effects of pregnancy.
