Early detection using qPCR of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in children with cystic fibrosis undergoing eradication treatment
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Mar 14, 2018
Blanchard AC, et al. - This investigation was pursued to find out if higher levels of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) (detected using qPCR) prior to culture positivity were associated with antibiotic eradication therapy (AET) failure in pediatric CF patients. It was noted that Pa-specific DNA was detectable in the year preceding a positive culture in pediatric CF patients with new-onset Pa infections. However, Pa DNA concentrations did not significantly differ between patients in whom AET was successful vs those in whom it failed. Therefore, early molecular detection of Pa may not lead to improved eradication success rates.
