Early detection of cancer: evaluation of mr imaging grading systems in patients with suspected nasopharyngeal carcinoma [head & neck]

American Journal of Neuroradiology Mar 20, 2020

King AD, Woo JKS, Ai QP, et al. - This study was attempted to investigate modifications to the contrast-enhanced MR imaging grading system for symptomatic individuals with suspected nasopharyngeal carcinoma, intending at improving discrimination of early-stage cancer and benign hyperplasia. Researchers investigated a second non-contrast-enhanced MR imaging grading system for asymptomatic patients from nasopharyngeal carcinoma plasma screening programs. They examined dedicated nasopharyngeal MR imaging before (plain scan system) and after intravenous contrast administration (current and modified systems) in patients from a nasopharyngeal carcinoma–endemic region, including 383 individuals with suspected disease without nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 383 individuals with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The study found that a modified MR imaging grading system enhances diagnostic performance for nasopharyngeal carcinoma detection. The evidence showed that contrast was not valuable for low MR imaging grades, and the plain scan displays potential for use in screening programs.
