Early corticosteroid cessation vs long-term corticosteroid therapy in kidney transplant recipients: Long-term outcomes of a randomized clinical trial
JAMA Feb 06, 2021
Woodle ES, Gill JS, Clark S, et al. - Researchers aimed at comparing the long-term kidney transplant outcomes in patients treated with and without maintenance corticosteroids via performing a randomized clinical trial. Allocation of 385 patients was done to maintenance immunosuppressive treatment with tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil with or without corticosteroids. During the median follow-up of 15.8 years after transplant, no difference was observed in kidney allograft survival between treatment groups. These findings suggest no necessity for corticosteroids as part of a calcineurin-based multiple drug immunosuppressive regimen in kidney transplant recipients.
