Early clinical indicators of Addison disease in adults with type 1 diabetes: A nationwide, observational, cohort study

Chantzichristos D, et al. - In this observational, matched-cohort study, researchers analyzed the early clinical indicators indicating the progress of Addison disease (AD) in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) among the 36,514 adult patients. They observed cases with a greater frequency of thyroid/antithyroid drug prescription as compared to controls (9.1% vs 1.8%). They also noted higher frequencies of diabetic retinopathy (12.1% vs 2.1%), infections needing hospital admission (16.7% vs 2.1%), thyroid/antithyroid drug prescription (28.8% vs 7.0%), and glucagon prescription (18.2% vs 6.4%) previously to AD diagnosis. An association between the development of diabetic retinopathy and glucocorticoid deficiency and the progress of AD among subjects with T1DM.
