Early birth is a key factor in educational disadvantage of twins: A data linkage study
Acta Pediatrica Aug 16, 2019
Zeltzer J, et al. - In this population-based record-linkage cohort study, researchers evaluated educational outcomes of twins and quantity the degree this is mediated by gestational age and other perinatal factors. The study sample consisted of all livebirths ≥ 24 weeks gestation in New South Wales, Australia with a corresponding standardised school test result for grade 3 in 2008-2014. According to findings, of 351,791 liveborn infants, there were 10,365 twins. Compared with singletons, nearly all the educational disadvantage experienced by twins is attributable to the risk associated with shorter gestational age, and partly to poor fetal growth. These results support attempts to prolong twin pregnancies gestation.
