Early assessment of the risk factors for diabetic retinopathy can reduce the risk of peripheral arterial and cardiovascular diseases in type 2 diabetes
Ophthalmic Research Sep 23, 2017
Tang J, et al. - An assessment was pursued of the risk factors for diabetic retinopathy (DR) and their correlation with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). PAD appeared to be frequently related to nonproliferative DR (NPDR) and proliferative DR (PDR). Hypercholesterolemia served as a significant risk factor for the development of PAD and CVD in patients with DR. A routine ankle-brachial index (ABI) test, duplex ultrasonography, and obtaining a lipid profile were recommended for DR patients to assist in reducing the occurrence of PAD and CVD.
